Hiring Our Heroes Job Fair is coming March 11, 2014 The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation is hosting Hiring Our Heroes, a job fair for veteran job seekers, active duty military members, guard and reserve members, and military spouses at the Salem Convention Center on March 11, 2015. Hundreds of job fairs are held annually across the country, and we are proud to be the Salem Oregon venue for this important program designed to help those who have served or currently serving our country. Hundreds of thousands of veterans and military spouses have found meaningful employment opportunities jobs all over the country since the program's launch in 2011. Veterans and military spouses continue to face significant employment hurdles. According to this recent data, post-9/11 veterans had an unemployment rate greater than 12%, nearly 50% higher than the national average. For veterans under age 25, the rate was closer to 30%, and military spouses faced an unemployment rate of 25%. To overcome these challenges, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation has partnered with Capital One for the Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign, an initiative to encourage thousands of companies to hire more than 475,000 veterans and military spouses within the next few years. In just 30 months, more than 1,700 businesses have stepped up to the plate and have committed to hire more than 448,000 veterans and military spouses. Of those commitments, more than 265,000 veterans and military spouses have already been hired. Eric Eversole Vice President, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Executive Director says much of the progress 'can be attributed to the strong relationships we have formed with public, private, and nonprofit partners.' “I'm Joe Public now. It's challenging to explain who I am and what I do, when I'm out of uniform,” said Lt. Col. Eric Warner at a recent Hiring Our Heroes job fair in Washington, D.C. “The military taught me the power of service and of helping people,” Warner says in the article The Journey from Soldier to Civilian. “I want to continue that as a civilian.” The importance of this program is demonstrated in this video produced by AlleyWire by Cassandra Cook, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, who found work through the Hiring Our Heroes program.
