On June 19 & 20, 2009 the Salem Convention Center participated in the annual Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. This was SCC's first year participating in this important event and together our team raised a total of $2,680.00. Starting at noon on Friday, June 19 and ending at noon on Saturday, June 20 we had representatives from our team on the track for the twenty four hour relay which was held for the first time at the Chemawa Indian School in Keizer. The inside of the track was filled with tents, displays and fundraising activities hosted by the many different teams. In addition, there were silent auction items and special events for cancer survivors including a survivor lap and survivor dinner. All totaled thus far, with fundraising continuing through August, this year's Relay for Life has raised over $275,000 in the fight against cancer. One of the most moving parts of the event was the Luminaria Ceremony of Hope. As the sun set and darkness fell over the many campsites the night was brightened by the glow of illuminated bags called luminaria, each of which had a special meaning. Some celebrated the lives of those who have battled cancer and have lived to tell their stories. Many remembered the lives of those who have been lost to this disease. All represent someone special who has been profoundly affected by cancer and the family and friends who continue to fight back in their honor. Fighting cancer is a team effort. The impact we make together is much greater than what any of us could do alone. Thank you to the supporters who donated toward our team's financial goal in this year's relay. We're looking forward to next year!
