Downtown Salem, Oregon is a vibrant community that is easy to navigate and filled with surprises- just ask anyone. Spring is the perfect time to visit our city and check out the many local attractions. Here are some of our favorites: 1) The Willamette Heritage Center at The Mill Salem's historical gem hosts thousands of visitors, history buffs, and school groups each year. The museum preserves the history of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill and represents one of Oregon's earliest and strongest industries. The museum is designated an American Treasure by the National Park Service Serves and hosts outstanding exhibits and events throughout the year. 2) Our Downtown Shopping District There is no better way to experience the unique landscape and culture of Downtown Salem than taking an afternoon stroll down Center Street and the surrounding areas. Visitors love to explore and photograph the historical buildings and can find most anything in the eclectic stores, galleries and boutiques throughout. The premiere stores located in Salem Center, in the heart of downtown, also attracts thousands to our community each year (not to worry- there is plenty of free parking located throughout!). 3) Historic Deepwood Estate Members of our community put a great deal of effort into to preserving this elegant 1894 multi-gabled Queen Anne style home, designed by prominent northwest architect W.C. Knighton. Deepwood is on National Register of Historic Homes and links us to our life in Victorian times. It offers visitors a place to reflect and relax in the ornate and beautifully landscaped gardens. 4) Riverfront Park- This park has everything one would want in a park- plenty of lush green space, lovely fountains, views of the river, a children's play area, an amphitheater, play equipment, a covered Pavillion and Salem's Riverfront Carousel (one of our big attractions!). This park is the place for gatherings and events throughout the year. 5) A.C. Gilbert's Discovery Village Children of all ages come here and let their imaginations run wild with indoor & outdoor interactive activities. Not to mention, the museum is located in three very cool historic houses and has 20,000-square-foot Outdoor Discovery Center. 6) One of the many local arts galleries and theatres- There are simply too many too mention in one post! We have so many local artists who share their creations in the exhibits that take place all over the city throughout the year. Salem, Oregon visitors also enjoy amenities such as the beautiful Reed Opera House, The Historic Elsinore Theatre and the Historic Grand Theatre, Hallie Ford Art Museum. These buildings and the performance that happen here are a vital part of our community. 7) Bush Barn Rose Gardens/ Bush's Pasture Park- Lush landscrapes, rich variety of roses, beautiful site filled with romance and history! 8) Capitol Mall Park/Willson Park- Within the boundaries of the Capitol grounds exist hundreds of varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers providing a dazzling display for all seasons.
